Sensor Specifications
Wind Speed |
| Units of Measure: | mph | kt | B | m/s | ft/min / km/h |
| Specification Range: |
| Operational Range: |
| Resolution: |
| Accuracy (+/-): | Larger of 3% of reading, least significant digit or 20 ft/min |
| Notes: | 1 inch|25 mm diameter impeller with precision axle and low-friction Zytel® bearings. Startup speed stated as lower limit, readings may be taken down to 0.4 m/s | 79 ft/min | 1.5 km/h | .9 mph | .8 kt after impeller startup. Off-axis accuracy -1% @ 5º off-axis; -2% @ 10º; -3% @ 15º. Calibration drift < 1% after 100 hours use at 16 MPH | 7 m/s. Replacement impeller (PN-0801) field installs without tools (US Patent 5,783,753). Wind speed calibration and testing should be done with triangle on impeller located at the top front face of the Kestrel. *F/S only in Ballistics units. Beaufort not available in Ballistics units. |
Ambient Temperature |
| Units of Measure: | Fahrenheit, Celsius |
| Specification Range: |
| Operational Range: |
| Resolution: |
| Accuracy (+/-): |
| Notes: | Airflow of 2.2 mph|1 m/s or greater provides fastest response and reduction of insolation effect. For greatest accuracy, avoid direct sunlight on the temperature sensor and prolonged sunlight exposure to the unit in low airflow conditions. Calibration drift is negligible for the life of the product. For further details, see Display & Battery Operational Temperature Limits. |
Pressure |
| Units of Measure: | inHg, hPA, mb |
| Specification Range: |
| Operational Range: |
| Resolution: |
| Accuracy (+/-): |
| Notes: | Monolithic silicon piezo-resistive pressure sensor with second-order temperature correction. Between 1100–1600 mbar, unit will operate with reduced accuracy. Sensor may not operate above 1600 mbar and can be damaged above 6,000 mbar or below 10 mbar. Calibration drift is negligible for the life of the product. |
Relative Humidity |
| Units of Measure: | % |
| Specification Range: | 5 to 95% 25°C non-condensing |
| Operational Range: | 0 to 100% |
| Resolution: | 0.1 %RH |
| Accuracy (+/-): | 3%RH |
| Notes: | To achieve stated accuracy, unit must be permitted to equilibrate to external temperature when exposed to large, rapid temperature changes and be kept out of direct sunlight. Calibration drift is typically less than ±0.25% per year. |
Compass |
| Units of Measure: | Compass Heading in True or Magnetic |
| Specification Range: | 0 to 360° |
| Operational Range: | 0 to 360° |
| Resolution: | 1° 1/16th Cardinal Scale |
| Accuracy: | ±5° |
| Notes: | 2-axis solid-state magneto resistive sensor mounted perpendicular to unit plane. Accuracy of sensor dependent upon unit’s vertical position. Self-calibration routine eliminates magnetic error from batteries or unit and must be run after every full power- down (battery removal or change). Readout indicates direction to which the back of the unit is pointed when held in a vertical orientation. Declination/variation adjustable for True North readout. |

Measure, log, track trends and expand capabilities with free Kestrel LiNK App.
The fast and easy tool for taking weather observations The Kestrel 5500 Fire Weather Meter Pro provides NIST-traceable accuracy, reliability and usability when it matters most. Measure every environmental condition plus PIG and FDFM and view trends with on-screen data graphing. Drop-proof, dust-proof, waterproof and able to withstand extreme environments without damage, your Kestrel Fire Weather meter can stand up to the abuses of work on a fire line wherever you’re assigned. A variety of carry pouch options makes it even easier to take your Kestrel Fire Weather meter with you. The Kestrel 5500 Fire Weather Meter Pro offers a large, high-resolution and contrast display and highly readable numerals. The Kestrel 5500 also includes a built-in dual color backlight, extra-strong poly-carbonate lens and single AA battery operation. In addition to measuring the current environmental conditions, the Kestrel 5500 FWM tracks and logs over 10,000 sets of time-stamped data, providing a complete history of conditions on the fire from the moment you arrive. With optional LiNK wireless connectivity, your data log can be transferred to a Kestrel LiNK app (available on Android) for easy export and email to an FBAN or meteorologist. Data can also be downloaded to a PC with either the accessory Kestrel LiNK Dongle or waterproof USB Data Transfer Cable (Both sold separately).

Excellent Service and quick delivery
Excellent product. High quality
Great device
Works very well, I use it to monitor the changing weather on a fire. Very easy to send all info to a Fire Behavior Analyst. You do not need to be in bluetooth range at all times. When you need a weather report you walk in range, connect and it will update all of the weather. You can send current conditions, the average conditons, or an excel database with all of the collected weather.

Reviews by our customers
The equipment are in new and good condition. The shipping are really fast after making a payment, they send a package in next day. I am ordering product from Thailand. To be honest after comparing price, Extreme meter LLC is the best price in product and shipping fee.
I needed urgent for my K2 winter expedition. I was on the last min and needed the goods to be sent in Iceland. Their chat online worked 100% and I was able to add on one extra peace even after I checkout. They send with UPS same day and I had the package 3 days later here in Iceland. Extreme Meters works and has good service I recommend them.
I ordered the Kestrel 3550FW meter. Received email notifications reporting the progression of my order up to delivery, which was much quicker than I'd expected. Couldn't be more pleased with the product and service.
The service was prompt and cordial. The Kestrel is used to measure wind velocity and temperature when applying pesticides for agriculture crop production. It is also used to measure weather conditions for livestock comfort.
Extreme Meters answered ALL my questions, - were totally professional - were EXTREMELY respectful to me - were a REAL pleasure to chat with ALL BEFORE I PURCHASED THEIR PRODUCTS MOST SINCERE THANK YOU AND APPRECIATED
The website was easy to navigate and placing an order was effortless. Shipping was extremely quick. My order was in my mailbox before I knew it. I started to use the meter immediately; it is excellent for my needs.
