Kestrel 5500-pocketweermeter/-station

Excellent field weather meter. Very accurate and easy to handle.
The only minus (for which I took one star off) is a very short Bluetooth range - if I move more than 2m with the phone from the meter, it gets disconnected. BT is supposed to have around 10m range.

I had a model Kestrel 3000 series and I opted for this serie 5000: great experience, many additional parameters, perfect choice for the trek, whatever the country visited.

Works as intended and super easy to download data.

Amazing device for collecting spot weather data and conditions, app syncing is spot on and I'm able to quickly create a pdf or csv for importing into other programs. I don't know what more anyone could ask for, this is a must have for anyone who want to do anykind of field research or weather hobbyist.

Das Kestrell 5500 Link ist sehr zuverlässig und macht was es soll! Leider ist es nicht kompatibel zu Sig Sauer BDX hierzu müssen Sie das Kestrell 5700 Oder 5700 Elite bestellen! Vielleicht sollte Kestrell hier mal ein Software Update bringen!

The Kestrel 5500 works well and done his job, but...I bought this Kestrel in order to pair it with a garmin tactix 7 pro ballistics, and visibly today it is impossible to connect them together.
I ask Garmin and kestrel separatly and as today I have no answers from them: disappointment !

Overall, I like the Kestrel 5500 (and the Kestrel Drop sensor) I purchased. They appear well built, and were easy to setup; I particularly liked how smoothly the firmware update on the Drop 3 was performed. On the Drop 3, I'd hoped to use this for quick freshwater stream temperature (even 6"-12" depth?) sampling, but I was just a little disappointed it carried only an IP67 rating and not IP68 or higher, as its hard to know how must to trust the IP67 spec on this device as used briefly in shallow water. The Kestrel 5500 worked as expected, though I wasn't impressed with the dim backlight under night conditions as I wanted to be. On a recent backcountry outing, several folks with other temperature reading devices felt the K 5500 reported temperatures that were a several degrees high, but I'm willing to test this further with other comparisons to verify any possible bias-- I've always had excellent luck with prior Kestrel devices on sensor accuracy. The data logging functionality with rotating overwrite worked great as expected. Last, since these higher priced units contain such a rich co-sensor capability, on my wish list would be to have these 5500 or higher models contain a GPS receiver/antenna capability, since geocoding recorded weather data is such a frequent need; reliance on a cellphone for its GPS to me needlessly tethers it to yet another nearby device, as much as I like the Link app idea.

So far I’m loving this unit, and so is my wife. She’s always running outside to get the temperature and wind speed. I’m using it with bluetooth on my phone connected to StrelokPro, a ballistics app. I bought a 2700 ballistics from the big A mail order company, I returned it first because it didn’t have the proper drag coefficient for airgun and mainly because it was obvious that I had received a used product. Keep up the good work Extreme Meters.

I am still learning to use my Kestrel. I work in landscape maintenance and find myself with a lot of questions about the various microclimates I work in. The Kestrel helps give insight and answers. Looking forward to learning more.

The Kestrel 5500 is all that it is advertised to be. While I purchased it primarily for its wind speed / direction capabilities, most of the other capabilities are useful. The device is well made with attention given to every detail, and it functions well. Great to see that there are still quality products made in America.

Overall excellent experience so far.
Have not used it to much but quickly learned how to make adjustments. No real learning curve. Have not used data transfer as of yet I did not OP for the link as I have no real use for immediate .transfer of data. Very high quality weather instrument which is accurate and well made..This meter should be great for my hiking, mountain climbing and winter sports.
